BGR101 - Introduction to Graphic Design

Course Description

Graphic design is the visual expression of ideas. This course examines the role of the graphic designer in translating concepts into visual form across digital media. Emphasis is placed on foundational design principles, visual thinking, and the creative process used throughout the Graphic Design Certificate curriculum.

Course Outline

This course consists of three modules:

• Module 1: Overview of Graphic Design
• Module 2: Branding and Color
• Module 3: Typography and Design Principles

Learner Outcomes

This course provides a comprehensive foundation for students to grasp the core principles and skills necessary for graphic design while emphasizing creativity, technical proficiency, and an understanding of the broader context in which graphic design operates.

Upon completion of the course, a successful student will be able to do the following:

• Demonstrate ability to identify the best practices used by graphic designers
• Explain the fundamental concepts of branding, including brand identity, recognition and personality
• Apply the principles of color theory, harmony, and color psychology to convey meaning and mood
• Identify the differences between Adobe® graphic design software and applications
• Apply the fundamental concepts of graphic design - including elements and principles - to create visually appealing designs for effective communication
• Demonstrate the ability to apply basic typographic principles to achieve maximum readability
• Identify different typeface classifications and typographic terminology
• Use a creative graphic design software application to develop original designs
