Course Description

Good poets understand, whether consciously or not, the "rules" of language well enough to break them in ways that inspire, confound, and move us. Use the tools of linguistics to analyze poetry, including using phonetics and prosody to look at rhyme and meter; syntax and morphology to look at word choice; and semantics to see how meaning is created.

Some background in linguistics, languages, or literature would be helpful, but the course is open to anyone. We will review topics as needed and learn as we go. If you are interested in writing poetry, you'll gain insight into improving your own work.
