Course Description

In conjunction with the landmark exhibit, Turner’s Modern World, at the Kimbell Art Museum (through February 6, 2022), this lecture looks at the important paintings that British artist J.M.W. Turner created for his patron, George O’Brien Wyndham, third Earl of Egremont. While staying on extended visits to Petworth, his lordship’s country estate in West Sussex, Turner captured the beauty of the house and its landscape, creating a stunning and significant record of the great estate. Turner's friendship with the Earl allowed him to return year after year, an example of a rare and deep partnership between painter and patron. The lecture explores not only Turner’s work at Petworth, but also the house and its many treasures.
