Course Description

Discover unusual, unconventional and revisionist versions of the Hollywood Western, the perennially popular American movie genre, from 1935 - 1975. Because of its long popularity and audiences' steady demand for novelty, Westerns often incorporated alternative treatments of classical plot, themes and story elements.  Through guided viewing and supplemental reading, explore new facets of this popular film genre.

Course Outline

Class 1: Introduction and The Hollywood B Western of the 1930s
Class 2: The Postwar Western as Family Melodrama
Class 3: The “Spaghetti Western"
Class 4: The International Western, continued
Class 5: Hollywood Revisionist Westerns, 1960-1975
