Course Description

Use your vacation to get a leg up on your test preparation strategy! Gain skills and strategies necessary to score well on the new [digital] SAT exam, and take the next step to achieve your academic goals. SMU's SAT preparation classes present information in manageable units, focusing on each component of the exam. Our experienced instructors will help you to develop the tools to take the SAT with confidence, and they will walk you through the questions you may encounter on the exam. On the last day, students will create a study plan leading up to exam day.

With SMU College Prep, you will master math and verbal skills needed for success on the SAT and reach your exam date ready to perform at your peak.

Our SAT Summer Institute gives high school students strategies to succeed on standardized tests in a condensed, four-day format beginning with a practice SAT exam and individual data analysis.

Course Outline


Math Section Overview include:

  • Algebra (linear equations in 1 variable; linear equations in 2 variables; linear functions; systems of 2 linear equations in 2 variables; linear inequalities in 1 or 2 variables)
  • Advanced Math (equivalent expressions; nonlinear equations in 1 variable; systems of equations in 2 variables; nonlinear functions)
  • Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (ratios, rates, proportional relationships, and units; percentages; one-variable data: distributions and measures of center and spread; two-variable data: models and scatterplots; probability and conditional probability; inference from sample statistics and margin of error; valuating statistical claims: observational studies and experiments)
  • Geometry and Trigonometry (area and volume formulas; lines, angles, and triangles; right triangles and trigonometry; circles)

Reading and Writing Section Overview include:

  • Information and Ideas (measures comprehension, analysis, and reasoning skills; knowledge and the ability to locate, interpret, evaluate, and integrate information; ideas from texts and informational graphics: tables, bar graphs, and line graphs)
  • Craft and Structure (measures the comprehension, vocabulary, analysis, synthesis, and reasoning skills; knowledge needed to understand and use high-utility words and phrases in context; evaluate texts rhetorically; make connections between topically related texts)
  • Expression of Ideas (measures the ability to revise texts to improve the effectiveness of written expression; meet specific rhetorical goals)
  • Standard English Conventions (measures the ability to edit text to conform to core conventions of Standard English sentence structure, usage and punctuation)

General Topics include:

  • Introduction to the SAT
  • Test-taking strategies
  • Question formats: 4-option multiple-choice format and student-produced response format
  • Time management
  • Data analysis of practice test
  • Study plan leading up to exam date

Using curriculum developed by experienced local test preparation professionals, SMU College Prep instructors are veteran educators who care about helping students achieve their goals. SMU works with our instructors to tailor our classroom experiences to the specific needs of the students. Instructors will guide each student in creating a study plan leading up to exam date.

Who should take this course?

Our SAT Summer Institute course is designed for students who are dedicated to their personal academic success. This course is ideal for current high school juniors who are planning to take the SAT for the first time; we also recommend this course for students who may have taken the exam already but wish to improve their scores. Students should expect to actively participate in class. Rising 9th  to 12th graders are welcome.
