CSC137 - Applying Design Principles to Data Visualization
Course Description
Good design helps users understand what information is most important, and a designer's thoughtful choices can make complex data feel approachable and professional. Learn to use color, value, shape and other design elements to make charts, diagrams and infographics engaging and impactful. Understand how to apply graphic design principles to data visualizations, ensuring that information is presented accurately and clearly so that audiences can use it in meaningful ways. Consider components of inclusive design to make visualizations usable by people with different abilities, including those with color blindness or low vision.
Course Outline
This course introduces the field and practice of data visualization and design:
- What is Data Visualization?
- Design Principles of Data Visualization
- Customization, Accessibility, False Visualizations
Learner Outcomes
- Demonstrate ability to focus audience's attention on the key message in a chart
- Identify false visualizations
- Utilize color to optimize understanding and accessibility of charts
- Identify deception or bias in charts and data visualizations
- Build a data visualization toolbox
Notes
After the course start, students have 3 months to complete assignments. Coursework completed prior to this deadline will be reviewed and receive feedback from the assignment evaluator. Each assignment evaluator is an experienced data visualization designer working in the field.

Completed assignments with a passing score will count for the full program.
