The program consists of seven required courses and can be completed in as little as a year on the Pacesetter or Intensive Path, or in 24 months following our Traditional Path.
The SMU PRO Certified Financial Planning Certificate program combines expert instructors, CFP Board-registered curriculum and flexible course schedules to provide the premier financial planning educational program in North Texas.
Our CFP Board-registered curriculum satisfies the educational requirements needed to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination. Taught by industry leaders working in the financial planning field, the curriculum covers comprehensive financial planning services with an emphasis on high-quality client service. The flexible schedule options are designed for working professionals, whether just starting or well established in the financial service industry.

Tuition and Fees
There is a nonrefundable $150 application fee before you submit your completed registration form and supporting documents.
Choose from three schedule pacing options:
Traditional Path: Tuition is $875 per course—save $100 off this fee when you register and pay before the priority deadline, two weeks before the first class.
Pacesetter Path: Tuition is $675 per course. You must call the SMU Global and Online office at 214-768-2273 to receive the Pacesetter discounted rate.
Intensive Path: Full tuition is paid up front—$4,995 standard rate (approximately $713 per course) or $4745 for priority rate (approximately $675 per course). This path is eligible for Sallie Mae loans.
Early Registration Discount
Complete your registration 14 or more days in advance of the first class meeting to receive a discount on tuition.
Pacesetter Path Discount
Complete the program in as little as 12 months and save up to $600 by taking two courses a quarter for three of the four terms. For more information, see the Course Info and Schedule section.
TSCPA and FPA Member Discounts
Members of the Texas Society of CPAs and the DFW Chapter of the Financial Planning Association are eligible for a discounted application fee and may register at the TSCPA/FPA rate. To obtain this discount, a one-time setup of your record is required. Call 214-768-2273 or email us with your TSCPA or DFW FPA member number.
SMU Staff, Faculty, Student and Alumni Discount
Members of the SMU community, including current and retired staff and faculty, current students, and all alumni, are eligible for a discount on course fees. To obtain this discount, a one-time setup of your student record is required, allowing you to receive your discount automatically whether you are registering by phone or online. The Fine Print: Discounts may not be combined with any other promotion. Discount is subtracted from the standard registration fee.
Intensive Path students may qualify for a Smart Options Continuing Education Student Loan, offered by Sallie Mae. Your Sallie Mae Loan application must be completed and approved 14 days before the first day of the program. Loan cannot exceed the cost of tuition. Contact our admissions team for details.

Students must register before attending a course. Instructors cannot accept registration fees. SMU reserves the right to substitute instructors, change course locations, cancel courses, adjust curricula or schedules, or limit enrollment.
Students must take courses in numerical order by term, and must complete courses with a grade of “C” or better.
Transfer of course work from another CFP Board Registered-program to the SMU PRO Certified Financial Planning Certificate Program may be considered. Requests must be made in writing to the Program Director for final approval. Requests must be accompanied by an official transcript including course descriptions from the school’s course catalog. Final approval will be made by the Director. Students must complete at least fifty percent of their coursework in the SMU PRO program (including the capstone course), to qualify for a certificate. Tuition does not include the cost of textbooks. Students should purchase the most recent editions online. Required books are not available at the SMU Bookstore. The cost of each book ranges from approximately $80–$160.
