Course Description

Jonathan Harr's The Lost Painting: Quest for a Caravaggio Masterpiece details the real-life mystery of a graduate student in Rome who discovered a Caravaggio painting that had been “missing” for centuries. This riveting tale takes the reader on a journey through Rome and other parts of Italy looking for evidence of a once known painting by Caravaggio, The Taking of Christ. We will weave together the fascinating story of The Lost Painting with the life and paintings of Caravaggio. We also will study other European painters of the Baroque period, learn about the Caravaggisti (followers of Caravaggio), and go on a virtual tour of Rome following in the footsteps of Harr's art historian protagonist.
