Course Description

Study and explore three novels that reflect the evolution of women’s lives in the workplace and home, from the early twentieth century through the present day. Join us to examine and discuss the importance of a woman’s role in the house as it relates to marriage, relationships, and family identity. Discover how literature reflects how women’s work moved outside the home and the importance of titles, gendered relationships, and the image of the “corporate woman.”

Course Outline

We will study three novels in this course:

  • House of Mirth (1905) by Edith Wharton
  • The Odd Woman (1974) by Gail Godwin
  • God Help the Child (2015) by Toni Morrison
