Course Description

Realism in the Twentieth Century

Explore the work of Edward Hopper, whose images of gas stations, diners, office workers and city dwellers are among the most iconic in American art. In this course, consider some of Hopper’s early work, made during his formative years studying with Robert Henri, leader of the group known as the Ash Can School. Then study Hopper’s style during his time living in Paris as well as his mature paintings that are considered monuments of modern art. Along the way, meet some of Hopper’s contemporaries and artistic influences – including the French Impressionists, his wife and model Josephine Nivison, and other European and American painters.
