Course Description

Explore the short story genre and read outstanding examples from Greek Mythology to today. Through reading and discussion, examine how authors portray themes like survival, racism, mythology and irony. Learn how writers from different eras approach concepts like mood, setting, action, and characterization. Discover the richness of the short story format and develop critical reading skills to enhance your enjoyment.

Course Outline

This class will feature the following stories:

  • “To Build a Fire” (London, 1908)
  • “Rikki Tikki Tavi” (Kipling, 1894)
  • “The Necklace” (de Maupassant, 1884)
  • “Desiree’s Baby” (Chopin, 1893)
  • “Brownies” (Packer, 2003)
  • “Trifles” (Glaspell, 1916)
  • “The Yellow Wallpaper” (Gilman, 1892)
