Course Description

Explore the stories of notable American heiresses and how their lives transformed British society. At the dawn of the twentieth century and the height of the Gilded Age, scores of wealthy Americans crossed the Atlantic in search of aristocratic titles and the grandeur of the British country house. Legions of wealthy American young ladies came to find husbands among the English nobility, trading dollars for titles. As portrayed in Downton Abbey, these marriages saved historic palaces and estates with dowries funding new roofs, plumbing and electricity and creating magnificent repositories of paintings, sculptures and decorative arts.
