Course Description

Use your vacation to get a leg up on your test preparation strategy! Gain skills and strategies necessary to score well on the SAT exam, and take the next step to achieve your academic goals. SMU's SAT preparation classes present information in manageable units, focusing on each component of the exam. In our online class students will interact with their instructor and other students through Zoom and our Learning Management System (Canvas). Our experienced instructors will help you to develop the tools to take the SAT with confidence, and they will walk you through the questions you may encounter on the exam. With SMU Test Prep, you will master math and verbal skills needed for success on the SAT and reach your exam date ready to perform at your peak.

Our Online SAT Summer Institute gives high school students strategies to succeed on standardized tests. In a condensed, four-day format, you'll have 20 hours of expert instruction to help you achieve your best score.

Course Outline

Quantitative Topics include:

  • Equations

  • Exponents

  • Functions

  • Linear functions/word problems

  • Fractions, percentages and averages

  • Rates, ratios, and proportions

  • Geometry and trigonometry

Reading Topics include:

  • Command of evidence

  • Words in context

  • Critical reading

Writing and Language Topics include:

  • Standard English conventions

  • Expression of ideas

  • Command of evidence

  • Words in context

General Topics include:

  • Introduction to the SAT

  • Test-taking strategies

  • Question formats
  • Time management

  • Process of elimination

Notes

Students should be prepared with paper, a pencil, and the calculator that they plan to use during the SAT exam. The registration fee includes all other materials including workbooks; they will be available through a scheduled curbside pickup at a pre-determined RISD location. Electronic version will also be available on Canvas (SMU's learning management system) to view and/or print.

There will be several short breaks and an hour long lunch break each day.

Our SAT Institute course is designed for students who are dedicated to their personal academic success. This course is ideal for current high school juniors who are planning to take the SAT for the first time; we also recommend this course for students who may have taken the exam already but wish to improve their scores.
