Course Description

Embark on a captivating exploration of the enduring friendship between Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe, two influential figures in modern art. The SMU Campus in Taos, New Mexico will be your home base for an in-depth exploration of the lives, artistry and lasting legacy of these extraordinary women. Through discussions, presentations and excursions, learn how each artist influenced the other's work. Kahlo and O'Keeffe had a special bond, and intertwined paths led them to connect deeply despite their contrasting styles.

 

 

Course Outline

This six-day immersive class covers the following topics:

  • Georgia O’Keeffe’s genesis in northern New Mexico
  • Frida Kahlo and Pre-Hispanic art
  • Kahlo and O’Keeffe’s creative circles
  • Georgia O’Keeffe and the creative process
  • Frida Kahlo and the creative process
  • A Kahlo and O’Keeffe dialogue
  • O’Keeffe - take time to look
  • Kahlo – take time to explore
  • Modernism
  • Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo
  • Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe
  • "Volcanic conjugal relations"

Day 1: SMU-in-Taos

  • Introduction: Welcome to Northern New Mexico and its rich cultures, history, language and traditions!

  • Film: Frida

Days 2 - 5: SMU-in-Taos & Other Locations
Excursions (subject to change)

  • O’Keeffe Welcoming Center, Abiquiú, NM
  • Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, NM
  • San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church, Ranchos de Taos, NM

Day 6: SMU-in-Taos
10 a.m. - noon (MDT) Closing Session

Notes

Registration fee covers museum and site admission fees and July 4th celebration dinner in Santa Fe.

Registration fee does not include travel to/from New Mexico and transportation to/from campus and excursions; lodging in Taos, or meals not included in the class itinerary. These arrangements are the responsibility of each student.
